Getting the right shade
Hair color results are measured on a international scale of 10 levels, ranging from extra light blond to dark black. The higher the number, the lighter the shade will be. Your final hair color will depend very much on your current hair color. Find out what your final haircolor result will look like by using the swatches on the side of each Garnier Nutrisse hair color carton.
What are the different haircolor tones?
The term “tone” in hair coloring refers to the color or combination of colors that, associated with the level, will give you the desired shade. Haircolor has a large range of tones that is divided between warmer, natural and cooler shades.
Deciding between two shades, should you choose the lighter or the darker hair color?
If you are having distress deciding between shades, it is a excellent rule of thumb to go for the lighter shade. It’s always simpler to darken hair that’s too light than the other way around. If your haircolor turns out darker than anticipated, you can add lighter dimensions with Garnier Nutrisse Multi Lights or Garnier Color Breaks.
Should I choose a warmer or a cooler tone?
Though this is really a matter of personal preference, here is some advice to help you choose:
Choose a warmer tone if:
- You have an olive or golden skin tone
- Your wardrobe consists mostly of reds, oranges, browns
- You often accessorize with gold jewelery
Warmer shades will enhance red or golden tones in your hair.
Choose a cooler tone if:
- You have a rosy, pinkish skin tone
- You often wear pink, purples, blues, greens
- You mostly accessorize with silver jewelry
Cooler shades will minimize red / orange tones in your hair.
Choose a natural tone if:
- You have an ivory or peach-like skin tone
- Your wardrobe consists of a variety of colors
- You accessorize with both gold and silver jewelery
Natural shades won’t change the current tone in your hair.
How much can I lighten or darken my hair at home?
For best results Garnier recommends choosing a shade no more than two levels lighter or darker than your current color.
I can’t find my shade in the store. Where can I buy it?
Garnier products are available at mass-market retailers, drugstores and supermarkets nationwide. If the product you’re looking for has not been discontinued, you should be able to find it at your local store. If you have no luck finding it, I suggest you look online at Amazon or Ebay.
I have a perm or dry ends. Will that affect my hair color?
To prevent color from taking too much on those dry, porous areas, apply a small leave-in conditioner like Garnier Fructis Color Shield Leave-In Conditioning Cream to the dry areas before applying color. It ensures color is more even.
After coloring, how long should I wait to shampoo my hair?
Garnier recommends waiting 24 hours after coloring before you shampoo your hair. When you do wash, use a mild shampoo and conditioner such as Garnier Fructis Color Shield Shampoo and Conditioner. They gently cleanse and condition woithout stripping or dulling color.
Should I do anything to prepare for coloring my hair?
Make sure you perform an allergy test two days before coloring. You must do this to make sure you won’t have a reaction to the product. The steps for the allergy test are described in the instruction booklet (found in the package).
I am pregnant. Can I use haircolor?
Garnier states that they know of no reason why women should not color their hair during pregnancy and while breast-feeding. Although not specially tested during pregnancy and breast-feeding, there is substantial amount of information supporting the safety of haircolor products when used properly.
Some physicians advise against using haircolor and other substances during these periods as an extra precaution. As with any question relevant to your family’s health, it is recommended that you discuss this subject with your physician and follow his/her advice.
Garnier hair color is continually tested for allergy.
